Since January 2002, the research group xakt gathers PhD-students and researchers in this field within the KTH School of Architecture, arranging research seminars and an annual open symposium.

xakt’s ambition is to contribute to a research environment that not only provides the knowledge produced through each research project, but also builds an essential foundation for a qualified debate in the architectural press and other media of importance for architectural education, the architectural profession and society at large.

Critical Theory in Architecture examines histories, theories and critical discourses of architecture. From a critical study of architecture as a cultural phenomenon there follow investigations into issues of meaning and representation; of the operations of ideological and power structures affecting specific architectures; and of how specific architectures effect ideological and power structures.

Critical Theory in Architecture uses spatially and materially specific critical and creative analytical research tools developed in architectural theory, in combination with research methodologies developed within cultural studies such as discourse analysis, hermeneutics, and constructivism.

Arkitekturkritisk Teori		Critical Theory in Architecture

Forskargruppen xakt samlar sedan januari 2002 arkitekturkritiskt orienterade doktorander och forskare inom Arkitekturskolan KTH i syfte att gemensamt utveckla arkitekturkritisk teori som forskningsfält. xakt har ambitionen att bidra med en forsknings- och forskarutbildningsmiljö som, förutom den specifika kunskapsutveckling som sker genom varje forskningsprojekt och utbildning av kompetenta lärare, ger en viktig grund för en kvalificerad arkitekturdebatt och kritik i arkitekturpress och andra media som är avgörande för grundutbildning, profession och samhälle. Arkitekturkritisk teori är ett interdisciplinärt forskningsfält som undersöker arkitekturens historia, teori och kritiska diskurs. Att kritiskt studera arkitektur som kulturbärare innebär att utforska arkitekturens plats som meningsbärande, och meningsbyggande fenomen i samhället, och att söka frilägga de idé- och maktstrukturer som specifika arkitekturer frambringas i och som de själv genererar i sitt sociala sammanhang. Arkitektur som ämne, fenomen, och kulturbärare, är tätt förbunden med en kritisk och självkritisk diskurs. Forskningsverksamheten inom arkitekturkritisk teori formulerar sina frågeställningar utifrån en medvetet kritisk hållning i förhållande till ämnet och professionen.
